Embellishments Masthead
Dear Jane-Marie,
portraitOver the past 30 days, I've . . .
  • Been to a mini-market showcasing new furniture, lighting, fabrics and more at the International Market Square
  • Watched a chair be upholstered on the spot at Kravet - see below for how a high quality piece of furniture is made
  • Toured the fantastic hotels in Las Vegas where I was so taken with the ceilings of the Bellagio (kids' room anyone? see below!)
So, where do YOU find your inspiration?  From this newsletter, from your favorite store, from your child's artwork?  Share your thoughts with me on Facebook!  And if you are having trouble getting inspired, meet me downtown at the International Market Square sometime and I'll give you a tour.  For those of you who crave a beautiful home and appreciate the ride you take to get there, it's like being addicted to shoes and going to a mall where all the stores are shoe shops!

Remember, we are on Facebook & LinkedIn!  Follow current projects, check for events and start discussions!  Find us on FacebookView our profile on LinkedIn

Sincerely,

Jane-Marie

Do You Know What's New in the World of Home Fashion?

Mini-Market Hot Finds

wall sconceThe Kentfield Collection Wall Sconces from Boyd Lighting just blew me away.  Were they inspired by the chunky necklaces of women's fashion or some sort of sea life?  Beautiful in a master bath or hallway between a master bedroom and bath.

And my all time favorite chandelier - simple, yet substantial, it could go rustic or refined.

And natural finishes were EVERYWHERE in furniture!  That cerused, pickled or whitewashed finish can be easily mixed in with your darker espresso or medium tone wood pieces.  From Brownstone Furniture, these items grabbed my attention:

And for upholstery, I think we all need about 2 - 3 in our living rooms in order to accommodate guests and high energy children!

Oh, and if everything is too gray, neutral, natural for you, here is where we have fun with accent colors in accessories, pillows, window treatments, additional upholstered pieces, rugs, paint colors - the possibilities are ENDLESS!

All items are available through Embellishments Design Studio at Designer Discount Pricing.

So What Makes Up a Quality Piece of Upholstery?

chairchair 2chair 3

Recently I attended a seminar to watch a Kravet chair be upholstered in front of our very own eyes.  The entire construction of the chair was explained and we got to see how much care goes into every little detail.  Key things to note when purchasing a piece of upholstery:

  • Is the seat 8 way hand tied? (See those strings going across the springs?  They are tied to the springs so that the springs don't move around and get lopsided.)  You can find sinuous spring seats in occasional chairs, but if you are looking for comfort, the 8 way hand tied is the way to go.  And, if the company claims it's 8 way hand tied, make sure it's not just a "drop in" unit.
  • Does your chair have cardboard wrapped around the arms?  It shouldn't!  If you sit on the arm of the chair and you hear a "crunch" - you might have cardboard in there.
  • Even if the frame of the piece is not exposed, you still want all the wood to be hardwood.  Kravet uses 16 layers of laminated maple which gives each of their frames superior strength.
  • Did you know the fabric affects how the piece will feel in terms of softness?  If you are selecting fabric and don't know what to choose, call me!  Better yet, before you buy a piece of furniture, call me and we can take a look at it to see if it will meet your needs.
Inspired by Spring at the Bellagio Hotel
While celebrating a women-only weekend with my family in Las Vegas, we walked through the Bellagio Hotel and were immediately struck by the amazing upside down umbrellas hanging from the ceilings.

The Inspiration:  The color pallet of fuschia and salmon are hot, hot, hot colors for 2011 (see my Feb 2011 newsletter for color trends to watch, posted on my website).

The Design:  If I could have a few of those umbrellas, I'd paint these flowers on the wall in a girl's bedroom, add a bed in black lacquer, all white bedding with a few eye-popping pillows, some of those great poufs from Cisco Brothers above in the yellow leather and a neutral or yellow rug with a striated ground.  What would YOU do?
