Embellishments Masthead
Dear (Contact First Name),
Long time no write! I haven't written to you since Nov 2011 and you may be wondering if I'm still in business and the answer is a resounding YES!  Embellishments Design Studio has grown exponentially in the last year and unfortunately my newsletters had to be put on the back burner.  The good news is that they will be back in full force this year.  Read on for tips, tricks and teasers on what's hot in the design world today . . .

Spotlight Source of the Month

We see pictures like these and we assume everything is made in China these days.  Not so in the furniture and accessories world.  Most of the quality chinese imports on shipfurniture available through the showrooms near my office at International Market Square are made here in the USA.  Many clients are surprised to find that out when I show them furniture options.  North Carolina is still the epicenter of all things home, but I continue to find more and more companies starting up throughout the country.

One such find is a US company which makes all of its lamp bases by hand.  Each base is formed on the potter's wheel and is then custom glazed.  Any glaze can go on any lamp base and the shades are interchangeable.

A true, custom look made right here in the USA.

Top Tip of the Month
Each month, I'll feature a new tip, trick or trend that you can work on incorporating into your home.  This month, the tip is:

"Don't let a trend take over your room"

Remember when we were dreaming of the lavender fields of Tuscany and all that it conjured up in our minds - aged surfaces, rusty wrought iron, patina this, patina that.  When I first started this business, that trend was everywhere and I fell for it hook, line and sinker.  I attributed it to the fact that I was a new designer, wanting to immerse myself in this design fully in order to understand my clientele.  Or maybe it was because I was pregnant, on bed-rest and heavily medicated.  Yes, that's probably what it was.

So, fast forward 10 years to the same room today.  A few things I have learned along the way:
  • A trend is just that - a trend, which means it will come and go in the blink of an eye or maybe in 6 months, if you are lucky.  Incorporate trends through accessories, one or two smaller furniture pieces, an accent wall color (that can easily be changed) or a great piece of fabric or pillows.   See how I brought in a bit of hot pink which can easily be changed out.  The throw on the back of the sofa can be changed out with the season or as my tastes change ($40 at the IMS Sample Sale!).  And remember, you might think something is a trend because you have not seen it before, but if you asked your mother, she might call it "classic" (think herringbone, chevron, greek key . . ).
  • Invest in classic shapes in classic, neutral colors
    - linen colored sofa with chocolate lounge chairs.
  • Use end tables and lighting to bring in eclectic, trendier pieces.  Who knows how long Chinese garden stools will be hot, but I just love them for their size and substantial weight they give next to a boxier chair.
  • Always put a large enough rug in the room - if you think you can't afford it, think again; use a bound carpeting to get the look for less, or talk to me about custom rugs through my rug supplier - you'd be amazed at how reasonable they can be and you get exactly the size you want!  And preferably have one without cat vomit on it, or whatever that brown thing is in the corner of my before shot!
  • And finally, never decorate a room while under the influence of drugs!
Design BuZZ for HOUses = HOUZZ.COM

I don't have an addictive personality and have always coveted people who have one - like runners, and people who drink coffee.  But then I found houzz.com and find myself visiting the site every day for one reason or another.  If you are looking for decorating ideas, be sure to do a search for "photos" and start creating your own ideabooks.  You can follow me on houzz.com by clicking  here.  Share your ideabooks with me and we can begin creating the look you want.  You can be as specific as you want in the search field and find inspiration that works for your space.  Check out my profile to see recent projects as well and feel free to leave a review if you are a past client.
